"What we want is never simple. We move among the things we thought we wanted: a face, a room, an open book and these things bear our names– now they want us. But what we want appears in dreams, wearing disguises. We fall past, holding out our arms and in the morning our arms ache. We don’t remember the dream, but the dream remembers us."

what we call “self care” is so often tied into maintenance of the body and hygeine because we implicitly believe that the body is the self.

When self care is so much more than maintaining hygiene. It’s taking care of your mental, emotional state of mind as well. Cutting off toxic people and ending toxic relationships are forms of self care. Changing your thought pattern to be more positive is self care. Surrounding yourself with only people that love you and appreciate you is self care

Even that definition has flaws. I feel like there is an underlying problem with making self care be about feeling good rather than being good for you. Self care can be uncomfortable. Because it is maintenance, just not necessarily of the body. Sometimes self care is admitting when you’re wrong. Self care can be having people near you who challenge. Self care can be pushing your boundaries. We can care for our bodies, our hearts, but we should also take time to maintain and improve our ethics
